Overview
In order to transport ultra-heavy loads cross country the railroad industry has developed a number of specialized heavy-duty flat cars. One of the most common examples of this unique category of railcar is the four truck cast steel frame flat car. The four trucks spread out over the rails to minimize track damage. Due to their robust construction these cars have had a long tenure on the rails with many operating over fifty years before beign rebuilt and continuing in service.
